Description:

Announcement DescriptionThe DOE is seeking proposals for studies in the general area of fracturecharacterization and analysis in high-temperature (>150?aC) environmentstypicalof the Basin and Range tectonic province. Specific task areas of interestinclude:1. Remote determination of fractures - Locate fractures which have nodetectable surface manifestation.2. Fracture mapping - Determine the size and orientation of singlefractures orfracture systems at depth.3. Fracture formation and growth - Study geological/geochemical/tectonicfactors, such as lithology, rock fabric, and in situ stress that govern thefracturing process. Provide the means to measure the growth of fractures.4. Fracture evolution - Analyze the transient behavior (life cycle) offractures and fracture systems in a variety of tectonic environments andsaturation conditions.5. Fracture permeability - Formulate an understanding of how fluids flowthrough rock. Develop novel means to reliably measure and monitor the flowoffluids in fracture systems and determine variations in flow capacity overtime.6. Fracture stimulation - Perform fundamental studies of processes andprocedures designed to enhance fracture permeability and maximize flowthrougha volume of fractured rock, considering the effects of the in situ stressfield, the induced stress field, pre-existing fractures and fluidchemistry.Develop techniques to enhance natural fracture permeability between aproduction and injection well while minimizing the risk of shortcircuiting.7. Near-field permeability - Provide means to maximize fluid flow capacityinthe region immediately surrounding the open hole sections of production andinjection wells.Since subject areas overlap, proposals will be accepted that incorporatemorethan one area of interest. However, proposals that focus on one succinctproblem are preferred.DefinitionsFracture ? A general term for any surface within a material across whichthereis no cohesion, e.g. a crack. Fracture includes cracks, joints, andfaults.Fracture System ? A set or group of contemporaneous fractures related bystress.
